Work for country's resurrection, Filipinos told
16 April 2006—On Easter Sunday, the whole Christendom celebrates the victory of Christ over death which gave humanity the possibility to rise to a new life with Christ.
But while the foundation of Christ's work of redemption is done, the Filipinos' work for the country's "resurrection" has only begun.
This was according to CBCP President, Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo, in his Easter message urging the people to work what Christ has started.
He said that Easter "invites us to overcome all boundaries and hostilities, to become a communion of communities, family of families."
"After Easter, we still have a country to build, because our people are still in mire of Good Friday," Lagdameo said.
He said that Filipinos continue to be crucified by human rights abuses, by the negligence of its leaders, by government's graft and corruption.
"We still have work to finish," he added.
Manila archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, on his part, said that Easter brought to our memory the steps that Jesus took through his passion to his triumph.
He prayed that people, from the highest leadership to the littlest villager, be motivated by life and example of Christ.
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, meanwhile, assured that while Filipinos are observing Easter in "sad and saddening socio-ethical backdrop, we too will have better times."
He said that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead.
"This infallible truth is a firm and strong warning to all those who lie, cheat and steal as if they were exempted from the judgment of Christ sooner or later," Cruz said.
"As for us common people, with Christ we die practically everyday with our daily trials and difficulties," he added. ""Yet, we too like Christ will eventually manage to rise from all our many hurts and fears."
