Prison Chaplains' and Volunteers' Conference Set
20 April 2006 -- A three-day conference is set to begin on Friday, April 21, at San Pablo Seminary in Baguio City, aimed at addressing the issues for the effective promotion of humane prison system.
Organized by the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC), this first North Luzon assembly will gather around 100 chaplains and volunteers from different arch/dioceses of the region.
With the theme: "Sharing Our New Life with You," the conference will examine the problems affecting the ministry, the campaign for the adoption of the restorative justice paradigm, the juvenile justice system and other concerns.
Prison system in the Philippines has been plagued with problems while a huge part of the population of inmates is yet wallowing in sorry conditions. The ECPPC has been charged by the CBCP to promote development in the prison sector.
Being the poorest of the poor, and with only few who are helping or intervening for them, the inmates merit the attention of the Church. They are the beneficiaries of the ECPPC's apostolate work.
The said commission pursues this mandate through the organization of volunteers in prison service in implementing the pastoral program for the rehabilitation of the prisons sector.
The ECPPC added that the conference also aims to discuss strategies and ways to integrate the prison service programs formulated and submitted by each region.
On April 23, the last day of the assembly, the participants will visit the Baguio City Jail including Benguet's district jail and provincial jail.
