13th CLSP Nat'l Convention held in Leyte
TACLOBAN CT, 22 April 2005 - The 13th Canon Law Society of the Philippines National Convention was held on April 18-21 at McArthur Resort Hotel in Candahug, Palo, Leyte. Around 100 clergies specializing canon law from around the country had come to attend this annual event.
Convention chair Bishop Bernard Pantin, also one of the five canon lawyers of Palo Archdiocese said he was surprised that the convention was the most attended ever compared to the previous CLSP meetings.
The convention with the theme: "The Priest: Teacher, Pastor and Moulder of Saints.Some Canonical Aspects of the Identity and Life of the Priest" was also attended by some priests coming from various dioceses of the host region.
The first day of the convention started with a Holy Mass presided over by Most Rev. Pedro R. Dean, D.D. Archbishop of Palo then a welcome program at the Ritz Tower de Leyte, few meters away from the historical Sto. NiñoChurch.
On the second day, three lectures (Juridical Aspects of the Prophetic Function of the Priest; Juridical Aspects of the Sanctifying Function of the Priest; and Juridical Aspects of the Kingly Function of the Priest) were thoroughly discussed.
Meanwhile, election of new CLSP officers and a very important reading and workshop on Position Paper took part on the third day of the convention. On the last day, participants were also toured to some of the city's tourist destinations like Imelda Marcos' seaside resort in her hometown in Olot, Palo Cathedral, the famous San Juanico Bridge that linked the islands of Samar and Leyte, Marjorie's Garden in Basey, Samar, Sto.Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum.
They also discussed business problems affecting the country including the hot issue which is Ligtas Buntis program of the health department which is being condemned by the Catholic Church and described by Bishop Pedro Dean as work of the devil and anti-life program of the government.
Also in attendance during the occasion were CLSP President: Msgr. Romulo Vergara, Most Rev. Leonardo Y. Medroso, D.D., Chairman, Episcopal Commission on Canon Law, and Prof. Luis Felipe Navarro, of the PontificalUniversity of the Holy Cross in Rome who served as the guest of honor. (Roy Q. Lagarde)
