Prison Reforms Forum Convened
29 APRIL 2006 – Two umbrella groups prominently associated with the CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, the Integrated Association of the Philippines (ICAP) along with the Coalition Against Death Penalty (CADP), have conducted Thursday, April 27, a Forum on Prison Reforms with the theme "Renewed Commitment to Reform in Corrections."
Held at St. Peter Parish, Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, the whole day forum was participated by various non-government organizations, prison volunteer groups and government offices, particularly the Bureau of Corrections, Parole and Probation Administration, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Public Attorneys Office, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and various Regional and Municipal Trial Court judges.
The forum kicked off in the morning with a keynote address on "Renewed Commitment to Reforms of the Justice System" and was readily followed with update reports on "Efforts on Reforms in Corrections" given by the appropriate government agencies—Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Bureau of Corrections, Parole and Probation Administration, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Public Attorney's Office, and the Regional/Municipal Trial Courts.
Highlighting the afternoon session was a talk on "Addressing Corruption in the Prison System" given by Fr. Albert Alejo, SJ, coordinator of the Jesuit anti-corruption movement, EHEM.
The CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, the Church's pastoral arm in its prison ministry, serves as the Secretariat for the two prison care coalition groups – the Integrated Correctional Association of the Philippines (ICAP) and the Coalition Against death Penalty (CADP).
