New CBCP president to assume post today
Intramuros— The new Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President, Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro, Iloilo, is set to formally assume his post today.
Abp. Lagdameo, 65, a native of Lucban, Quezon, is the 17th President of the CBCP.
Prior to his election, Lagdameo was the vice-president of the Conference. He succeeds Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, who decided not to seek reelection to devote more pastoral attention to his archdiocese.
Abp. Lagdameo was ordained priest on Dec. 19, 1964. He was first assigned as assistant pastor in Unisan, Quezon in 1965 and became a professor and prefect of disciple of the Mt. Carmel Seminary in Sariaya, Quezon.
Abp. Lagdameo is Bachelor of Arts graduate of the San Jose Seminary in 1965 where he also took up Theology and Philosophy.
On Aug. 12, 1980, he was appointed bishop of Lucena City then he became auxiliary bishop of Cebu. Abp. Lagdameo was later designated as co-adjutor bishop of Dumaguete City and then he came bishop of the same city in 1989.
He was named archbishop of Jaro, Iloilo on March 11, 2000. (Roy Q. Lagarde)
