CBCP: Search for truth must pursue
30 January 2006---Members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said Sunday that the only way Filipinos can win war against the raging political crisis is by going to its cause: diminishing morality.
They said that among its visible symptoms are "deceit and dishonesty, corruption, manipulation and a deadening preoccupation with narrow political interests, perceived in practically all branches and at all levels of government."
"More regrettable is the common knowledge that many of our politicians are behind such ventures that disregard the common good," the prelates said in a statement.
The conference's statement was issued amid sustained calls for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The bishops also urged that investigation should continue on the alleged electoral fraud committed by Arroyo which has been with "acts of evasion and obstruction of the truth."
"We recommend that the search for truth be relentlessly pursued through structures and processes mandated by law and our Constitution," they said adding that such probe should be led by "credible people, persons of integrity and probity."
Much have been said and heard about the administration. Sadly, a sense of hopelessness reigns among an increasing number of Filipinos.
They also urged political leaders to undertake reforms to gain back confidence and trust in our political process.
"As a first step we strongly urge our political leaders to undertake electoral reforms posthaste," they added. (See full text of Pastoral Statement)
