Auxiliary Bishop of Caceres named
His Holiness Pope Benedict has appointed Monsignor Jose R. Rojas Jr. as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Caceres. He will assist Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legaspi, O.P., who has been Archbishop of Caceres, without an Auxiliary, for the last 21 years.
Monsignor Jose Rojas will be 49 years old on August 18, 2005. He was born in Cebu, entered the Minor Seminary in Naga when he was 12 years old, and was ordained in Naga at the age of 25. He earned his M.A. in Religious Education at the Central Seminary of U.S.T. in Manila. Then he went on for another M.A. in Religious Studies, and a Doctorate in Moral Theology, at Louvain in Belgium.
He taught in the Major Seminary of Naga, became a Judge in the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Caceres, President of the Commission on the Doctrine of Faith, Rector of the Major Seminary, and finally Vicar General of the Archdiocese. He has not set any date for his installation as Auxiliary Bishop of Caceres.
At the same time, the Holy Father accepted the resignation of Bishop Salvador T. Modesto from the office of Auxiliary Bishop of San Carlos in Negros Occidental. In accordance with the provisions of Canon Law, Bishop Modesto tendered his resignation on March 10, 2005 – his 75th birthday. It was officially accepted by the Vatican on Monday, July 25, 2005.
The appointment of Monsignor Rojas as Auxiliary Bishop of Caceres, and the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Modesto as Auxiliary Bishop of San Carlos, were announced simultaneously with their proclamation in Rome, by the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Antonio Franco.
