Jaime Cardinal Sin passed away at 76
MANILA, 21 June 2005— The beloved Roman Catholic Jaime Cardinal Sin passed away Tuesday morning following a public fight with kidney problems and diabetes.
He succumbed to death due to multiple organ failure at 6:15 a.m., and two days after he was confined at the CardinalSantosMedicalCenter in San Juan, Metro Manila. He was 76.
His remains now lie at the Manila Cathedral for his wake and public viewing.
The Cardinal was an influential and moderate force in the Church and in secular circles as well.
He was reckoned as a controversial leader of the Catholic Church in the Philippines wherein he served for almost 30 years as Metropolitan Archbishop of Manila.
In 1986, Cardinal Sin played a major role in the first people power revolution that wrecked the Ferdinand Marcos regime.
He also fronted the second People Power uprising in 2001 that toppled former president Joseph Estrada.
In 2003, he retired as archbishop of Manila at the age of 75. (Roy Q. Lagarde)
