Ledesma Named Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro
7 March 2006—Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, as the new Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. He succeeds Archbishop Jesus B. Tuquib whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father after having reached the age limit of 75.
Ledesma is presently bishop of the Prelature of Ipil, where he was assigned shortly after his Episcopal Ordination in 1996. He is also the Vice-President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines where he concurrently chairs the CBCP Commission on Inter-religious Dialogue. At the Vatican, he is a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
Born in Iloilo City, Ledesma will be 63 on March 23. He was ordained priest on April 16, 1973 to the Society of Jesus. Before he was made bishop, he was Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of South East Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (SEARSOLIN) and later as the Executive Vice-President and Dean of College of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro. As a young priest, he worked as an Assistant Parish Priest in a small parish in Zamboanga del Sur.
On another development, the Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. George Beluso Rimando of the Diocese of Tagum as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Davao. He will assist Archbishop Fernando R. Capalla in the pastoral administration of the Archdiocese.
Born in Tagum in 1953 and ordained priest in 1980, Fr. Rimando is currently serving as administrator of the quasi-parish of the Assumption in Merville, Tagum.
No date has been set yet for the installation of Bishop Ledesma as Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro and the episcopal ordination of Monsignor Rimando.
