CBCP Press Corps Observe World Communications Day
22 MAY 2006 - In the hustle and bustle of the undeniably busy life of media practitioners, faintly these news reporters would pause a second, gather in a non-news breaking gaiety and observe such event as the World Communications Day.
But this was precisely what happened yesterday when the CBCP Media Office celebrated the 40th World Communications Day with the members of the CBCP Press Corps consisting of media workers and representatives of mainstream media.
Held at the Lay Formation Center in Bonoan, Dagupan City, the location exactly struck a resonant chord with the spirit or purpose of the weekend affair. "What fitting way else it is to celebrate Communications Day but with fellow communicators," quipped Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, who also heads the CBCP Media Office.
But the 2-day gathering was not all fellowship for the news reporters from different national media organizations covering the Church. The week-end affair was highlighted with the celebration of the Holy Mass presided by Msgr. Quitorio.
"Really, with gatherings like this we intend the CBCP Media Office to further promote its continuing partnership with the mainstream media in pursuing the same goal of being protagonists of truth," Msgr. Quitorio added.
That modern media is called to be "protagonists of truth" exactly echoes well with Pope Benedict XVI's message for the 40th World Communications Day. "The call for today's media to be responsible - to be the protagonist of truth and promoter of the peace that ensues carries with it a number of challenges," the Holy Father stated in his message.
Pope Benedict XVI also said that the media should serve as a "network in facilitating communication, communion, and cooperation." The Holy Father added that "accurate reporting of events, full explanation of matters of public concern, and fair representation of diverse points of view must, then, always be fostered."
