CBCP hosts International Congress on Bioethics
Intramuros –The Pontifical Academy for Life together with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Office on Bioethics and the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas are sponsoring the 2005 International Congress on Bioethics with the theme Celebrating the Gospel of Life: Basic issues in Bioethics. This will be held on December 5 to 7, 2005 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC), UST, Espana, Manila.
Reflecting on basic issues connected with human life at the beginning, the end and in between; sharing views with local and international experts in bioethics on current medico-moral problems; offering a unique opportunity for continuing education to those actively involved in teaching bioethics, in healthcare delivery, in research, or deeply concerned with fundamental and practical bioethical issues are the objectives of the congress.
The opening ceremonies will be highlighted with a Eucharistic celebration presided by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal. The president of the Pontifical Academy for Life Bishop Elio Sgreccia and CBCP office on Bioethics chairman and Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros will give the opening remarks.
Priests, religious, seminarians, students and lay leaders from the Philippines and in Asia are attending the congress.
The Congress speakers are: Bishop Elio Sgreccia (Vatican) on the Foundations of the Ethic of Life: Ethical Personalism; Bishop Willem Jacobus Eijk (Netherlands) on Evangelium Vitae and the Culture of Life Today; Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi, O.P. (Caceres) on Evangelium Vitae and the Churches in Asia; Bishop Anthony Fisher, O.P. (Syndey) on Stem Cell Research (Embryonic and Adult); Bishop Jose Oliveros (Malolos) on the Meaning of Life.
Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Rosales will be the main celebrant of the Eucharistic Celebration on December 6, while Archbishop Antonio Franco, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, on December 7.
Founded by Pope John Paul II in the 1994 the Pontifical Academy of Life has an international team presently composed by 51 ordinary members, all appointed by the Pope, who are experts in the different areas of the biomedical sciences and the disciplines. Aside from the ordinary members there are 72 correspondent members whose contribution is requested on specific occasions, in line with their special individual expertise.
