Pope Benedict Names new Bishop
(March 25, 2005) - The Vatican announced today that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Rev. Fr. Elenito De Los Reyes Galido as the new bishop of Iligan diocese.
Iligan diocese has no bishop for almost two years now after its prelate, Bishop Emilio L. Bataclan, was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Cebu in June 2004.
Born in Managok, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, Galido is 52 years old. He took up his theology studies at St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary in Davao City.
Galido is currently serving as an associate priest at St. Francis de Sales Church, in Brooklyn, U.S.A., while finishing his master's degree in Pastoral Counseling and Spiritual Care.
Ordained priests in 1979, Galido first served as a spiritual director at the Pope John XXIII College Seminary, also in Malaybalay, and named rector in 1986. He also became parish priest of the Immaculate Conception parish in Kibawe in 1982 to 1984.
The bishop-elect held two major positions in the diocese of Malaybalay such as the chancellor in 1986 and as vicar general two years later.
From 1991, he also served as the administrator at San Isidro Cathedral in Malaybalay for 5 years.
Iligan diocese covers a population of more than 1 million Catholics. It has 58 priests, 35 diocesan and 23 religious, plus 95 other religious men and women who work in 26 parishes.
