Religious Superiors meet, tackles spiritual vitality in Mission

MANILA, July 10, 2007—The Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) composed of 376 religious congregations of men and women in the country, met at the Carmelite Missionaries Center of Spirituality in Tagaytay City last July 3-6, 2007 on how to keep the fire going in their desire to be faithful to their respective charisms in fulfilling the mission of the church to proclaim the Gospels.

Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB, the in-coming Co-chair of the Association, presented the theme “Renewing the Spiritual Vitality of our Religious Communities" by citing some studies on the signs and causes of loss or presence of vitality in religious communities.

Fr. Marlon A. Lacal, O' Carm, gave an input on the Role of Major Superiors as Spiritual Animators.

The two-outgoing Co-chairpersons, Mo. Ma. Luz Mijares, OSA and Bro. Edmundo Fernadez, FSC reported on the accomplishments of the association highlights of which are the conduct of the different events affecting the membership such as the needs of the elderly religious and the implications of the new guidelines of the Bureau of Immigration which affect the status of the religious missionaries in the country.

It also proactively addresses the volatile national situation as a result of the "Hello Garci Controversy" by coming together and discerning the appropriate response to the crisis.

Different lecture series or fora were also organized in cooperation of the Mission Partners on the theme women issues, ecology, charter change, poverty, militarization and extra-judicial killings.

Among the members who gave the sharing during the euchatistic celebrations were Fr. Edmundo Nantes of the Dominican Fathers, Fr. Daniel Huang of the Society of Jesus, Mo. Ma. Luz Mijarez of the Agustinian Sisters, and Bro. Manuel V. de Leon, FMS of the Marist Brothers. The Association elected a new set of officers.

For the women congregations are: Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB, Chair; Sr. Teresa Mueda, DC - Vice Chair; Sr. Evelyn AGuilar, RVM; Sr. Ma. Josefina Matias, RA; Sr. Lourdes Dizon, CM; Sr. Emelina Villegas, ICM and Sr. Carmelita Victoria, SSpS.

For the Men congregations are: Fr. Jesus Malit, SSS - Chair; Fr. Daniel Huang, SJ - Vice Chair; Fr. Edmundo Nantes OP; Fr. Rene Manubag CMF; Bro. Manuel V. de Leon, FMS; Bro. Edmundo Fernandez, FSC; Fr. Brian Gore, MSSC.
